Best Time to Visit Parvathamalai

The best time to visit Parvathamalai is during the cooler months from October to March. During this period, temperatures are pleasant (20°C–30°C), humidity is lower, and the weather is ideal for the 3–5 hour climb to the summit.

Avoid visiting during the peak summer months (April–June) when temperatures can exceed 40°C, making the steep climb dangerous. The monsoon season (July–September) brings heavy rainfall that makes the rocky paths and iron ladders slippery and hazardous.

Best Months for Trekking: October to March

October–November (Post-Monsoon)

The landscape is lush and green after the monsoon rains. Water streams may be flowing along the trail. Temperatures are comfortable (23°C–31°C). This is one of the best windows for photography and nature lovers.

December–January (Winter Peak)

The coolest months with morning temperatures dropping to 18°C–19°C. Ideal for trekking as you won’t overheat during the climb. Carry a light jacket for the early morning start. The clear winter skies offer spectacular sunrise views from the summit.

February–March (Late Winter/Early Summer)

Still good for trekking but temperatures begin to rise. Start your climb by 5:00 AM to avoid the midday heat. March can get warm (up to 35°C), so carry extra water.

Special Days: Pournami (Full Moon)

Full moon days (Pournami) are the most popular time to visit Parvathamalai. Thousands of devotees climb the hill on these days, creating a festival-like atmosphere. While the spiritual energy is powerful, be prepared for:

  • Large crowds: The trail can get congested, especially at the iron ladder sections
  • Limited facilities: Water and snacks may run out at small shops along the way
  • Longer trek time: Expect 4–6 hours instead of the usual 3–5 due to crowd movement

If you prefer a quieter experience, avoid Pournami days and visit on regular weekdays during the October–March window.

Months to Avoid

April–June (Summer)

Temperatures regularly exceed 38°C–40°C in Tiruvannamalai district. The rocky terrain absorbs and radiates heat, making the climb extremely challenging. Heat exhaustion and dehydration are real risks. The forest department may restrict access on extreme heat days.

July–September (Monsoon)

The Eastern Ghats receive significant rainfall during the southwest monsoon. The steep rocky paths become slippery, and the iron ladders can be treacherous when wet. Landslides are possible on the Kadaladi route. Trekking is strongly discouraged during heavy rain.

What to Wear Based on Season

Season Recommended Clothing
Winter (Nov–Feb) Light layers, full-sleeve shirt, trekking pants, light jacket for morning
Summer (Mar–Jun) Light cotton clothing, cap/hat, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50+)
Monsoon (Jul–Sep) Quick-dry clothing, rain jacket/poncho, waterproof footwear, extra socks
Post-Monsoon (Oct) Light layers, rain jacket (for occasional showers), good grip shoes

Weather Safety Tips

  • Check the forecast: Look at Tiruvannamalai or Polur weather before starting your trek
  • Start early: Regardless of season, begin your climb by 5:00 AM to avoid peak heat
  • Carry enough water: 2–3 litres in winter, 3–4 litres in summer
  • Avoid trekking during thunderstorm warnings: The summit is exposed with no shelter
  • Monsoon caution: Iron ladders become extremely slippery when wet — do not rush
  • Summer caution: Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating

Temperature at the Summit

The Parvathamalai summit (4,500 ft / ~1,370 metres) is typically 3°C–5°C cooler than the base. On winter mornings, summit temperatures can drop to 15°C–18°C with strong winds. The wind chill can make it feel even colder, so carry a windcheater or light jacket even in warmer months.
